Diabetes Insipidus – Introducing The 4 Types

~ Diabetes Insipidus – Introducing The 4 Types ~

When people hear about diabetes they immediatelyDiabetes Insipidus associate it with mellitus diabetes (sugar diabetes), insulin shortage within the body, rather than with diabetes insipidus. However, diabetes insipidus is a totally different type of condition. Also known as DI, diabetes insipidus is a unique type of diabetes commonly referred to as “water diabetes”.

Diabetes insipidus can be spotted easily through various factors. To begin with, the main symptom is frequent urination. However, unlike other types of diabetes, this time your urine won’t be concentrated, quite the opposite, it will extremely diluted because it will consist mostly of water. Because the urination process is frequent, you’ll tend to drink a lot of water on a daily basis. The whole process will get in the way of your sleeping process because of the need to go to the restroom during the night.

Introducing the 4 types of diabetes insipidus

Diabetes insipidus is a condition that comes in 4 different types. Each and every condition features different triggering factors and treatment options.

1. Neurogenic diabetes insipidus

Also known as central diabetes insipidus, this condition is probably the most common of the 4 types. The cause is vasopressin deficiency, body hormone that usually acts upon people’s kidneys and diminishes urine development. Generally speaking, the condition damages the pituitary gland right where vasopressin is being manufactured. Hence, people’s pituitary gland could end up affected by a plethora of diseases such as: bacterial infections, tumors, trauma, and even hereditary defects. Diabetes insipidus that’s neurogenic cannot be cured. However, the condition can be remedied by a varied line of medications such as desmopressin (DDAVP).

2. Gestagenic diabetes insipidus

Also known as gestational diabetes insipidus, the condition develops in pregnant women. When the pituitary gland is harmed partially, the lack of vasopressin kicks in. In certain cases, the placenta can annihilate the hormone way too soon.  The condition can be treated with DDAVP and the patient can recover in 4 to 6 weeks after giving birth to the baby. It might however, show up again on another pregnancy.

3. Nephrogenic diabetes insipidus

Nephrogenic diabetes insipidus happens when dysfunctional kidneys must deal with vasopressin. The condition might happen because of the intake of certain medications. Unlike the other two types mentioned above, nephrogenic diabetes insipidus cannot be treated with DDAVP and it cannot be cured. The condition is inherited and it happens mostly in men. Still, there are therapies that can alleviate the symptoms.

4. Dipsogenic diabetes insipidus

Dipsogenic diabetes insipidus happens when vasopressin is besieged by too much fluid consumption. The patient will have the tendency to drink a lot of fluids all the time. Ergo, the most annoying factor is peeing throughout the night, which will greatly disturb the patient’s sleep. Similar to neurogenic diabetes insipidus, the condition cannot be remedied. However, it can be kept under control with small doses of DDAVP.

Extreme dehydration can lead to severe brain damage and even loss of life. Diabetes insipidus is a serious disorder that’s completely different from sugar diabetes. Nevertheless, a physician can help patients control the disease with medication, a proper diet plan, and ultimately, with surgery.
